Sam
Sam is a young and enthusiastic singer-songwriter who is born and raised in the Northern Beaches of Sydney. He started playing guitar at the age of 10, and 4 years later decided to try writing music. Very soon his musical taste began to develop, as did his skills in performance, composition, music theory, recording, and production. Over the years he also beg"n to tinker with other instruments, the most notable being bass guitar and piano/keyboard.
Sam's understanding of music and the way he writes songs has been dramatically shaped by the bands that he listens to; some of the most noteworthy being Radiohead, Muse, Nothing But Thieves, The Fratellis, Eels, Saskwatch, Guster, and Mac DeMarco. Someone that Sam has always been particularly inspired by is Thom Yorke, the lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of Radiohead. "I believe Yorkeʼs unconventional rhythmic and harmonic conventions speak heavily into a realm of musical experience that doesnʼt often get explored. I remember listening to his music at the age of 15 and being completely taken back at how one can take dissonance and tonal instability and make such beautiful textures out of it. Coupling this with his broken and uneasy vocals, Yorke has a way of creating great levels of beauty amidst often unsettling backdrops. The hundreds of afternoons I spent listening to this music on the bus ride home from school taught me one thing; music is incredibly beautiful, and that beauty can be expressed through wholeness, as well as brokenness." This is definitely something that Sam constantly strives to incorporate into his own music making and pass on to his students. |
